Why do espalier fruit trees need trellises?
Espalier fruit trees are often grown on dwarfing rootstocks.
Trellising is required for most espalier forms to enable training. Even if you do not think your tree will need a trellis, it will add to the visual impression, ease of maintaining straight or curved branches and branch spacing.
